Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing in Hudson, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in the field, with centers situated across various cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests are utilized for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse practitioners now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationers. Their chief advantage is a substantially prolonged drug use detection window, often extending to 90 days, performed under observation, and difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as an effective method for identifying usage of alcohol and drugs. The strands of hair offer an extended timeline of drug and alcohol usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair's structure as it grows. When sampled from near the scalp, hair can yield detection results for alcohol and drugs over an approximately 3-month timeframe. Hair samples are effortless to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch piece, consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional markers, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Note that head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps of processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first entered into a lab's system. This phase entails confirming that the sample was securely sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample is determined as presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other procedures (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening challenging to execute.

For any positive screening outcomes, Confirmation is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter period for urine tests.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage trends: It reflects a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not solely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this procedure assesses the hair shaft, not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
