Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing extensive hair follicle drug testing in Lincoln, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair and alcohol tests at numerous centers across the nation. To utilize this testing, hair length should be 1.5 to 2 inches. This analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

There’s an increasing trend toward hair follicle drug testing for its extended detection period—up to 90 days. Courts, employers, and probation programs favor it for precision over urine tests, especially due to its observed collection reducing cheating possibilities. However, urine tests remain optimal for drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches, involving about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be procured, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This procedure includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening features an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient means to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be valid for court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

Following a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

To authenticate any positive screening outcome, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples that screen positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can discover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It can reveal usage patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair over approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
