Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Livermore, Iowa. When in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, with centers nationwide to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method in drug testing. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair over standard urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance policies and are employed for those on probation. The main advantage is their extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, within an ensured collection process which minimizes cheating. Still, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective resource for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and narcotics by embedding biomarkers within the developing hair fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and substances. It's straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It’s recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. Mention of head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (face, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result lab processing includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any non-electronic chain of custody data entry.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid evaluation for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, confirmation is needed for a positive screen to be legally valid. Samples that test presumptively positive require additional confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides insights into drug habits over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine testing in Livermore, IA by offering enhanced detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a detailed overview of substance use over a longer period, capturing more comprehensive data.

The superior accuracy in drug detection makes hair follicle testing a reliable choice. Its resilient nature against many common methods of sample tampering offers an unmatched level of trustworthiness for employers.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
