In Stout, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair samples, our expertise in hair testing is available across all cities nationwide, ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either on your head's crown or other body areas. Hair tests can analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors increasingly favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is chosen by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services. Its key advantage is a broader detection window of up to 90 days, observed directly, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) that is nearest the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Employ a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This phase involves checking that the sample was sealed and sent accurately, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial brief examination for substances of abuse. While it cost-effectively rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in court. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to alternate methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Any positive results from screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The difficulty in altering a hair drug test leads to more accurate results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a record of drug use patterns over a timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Stout, IA
Hair follicle testing demonstrates superior accuracy, offering greater reliability than urine tests. It effectively detects long-term drug use, allowing for precise identification of substance abuse over several months rather than days. This makes hair testing a choice for comprehensive review.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle tests provide a more accurate assessment of an individual’s substance usage patterns. As a result, it's more difficult to deceive, ensuring the integrity of the testing process and delivering trustworthy results for various stakeholders.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Stout, IA
Hair follicle drug testing can reveal patterns of substance use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days. This is critical for employers in Stout, IA seeking a comprehensive understanding of an employee's or candidate's history, beyond the immediate actions or behaviors.

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers detailed insights, helping organizations make well-informed decisions about current and prospective employees. This longer detection period results in a thorough evaluation of whether they uphold a drug-free lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
