Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Turin, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments, and our centers are available in every city nationwide to perform such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become more commonplace for drug assessments. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers often utilize hair follicle tests because they offer a longer detection period, usually up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests still remain the preferred method for detecting recent drug usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a robust instrument for detecting substance and alcohol consumption, hair testing has gained prominence. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair, a comprehensive long-term record of substance use is obtainable. A sample sourced near the scalp is capable of offering up to a 3-month observational window for alcohol and other substances. The simple collection process, challenging adulteration, and uncomplicated shipping make hair an optimal choice.

Approximately 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) next to the scalp will yield around 100mg, the recommended sample for both initial screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional assessments, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg of specimen is advocated. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" is defined as scalp hair solely, whereas "body hair" encompasses other variations such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The fundamental laboratory procedures of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes ancillary data entry that may not be included within an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening allows for a swift preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is economical and beneficial in eliminating potential drug usage in most samples, confirmation is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples presenting a presumptive positive in the Screening necessitate a subsequent validation.

Presumptively positive samples at the Screening juncture are further processed from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, the removal of drugs from hair is executed at concentrations significantly lower compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as notably challenging.

Affirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure covering Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine examinations which possess a narrower detection span.
  • Resistant to falsification: Circumventing a hair drug assessment is exceedingly challenging, resulting in heightened result precision.
  • Delivers historical insights: Capable of indicating a usage pattern over a duration, rather than merely indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Detection of drugs within hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur greater costs compared to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth variability can influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, though the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
