Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug analysis in Keats, Kansas. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing and nationwide centers are at your disposal. Hair samples must typically be 1.5 to 2 inches, with body hair as an alternative. These tests reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored options.

Recently, the trend in drug screening has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over standard urine tests. These are ideal for zero-tolerance policies when a longer detection window is desired; about 90 days. Collected under observation, these are nearly foolproof. Yet, for drug use detected within 5 days, urine testing remains supreme.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has gained recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results encompasses four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves commencing the sample's journey into the lab system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening executes a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is economically efficient to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be viable for legal proceedings. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If positivity is indicated in the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any screening result deemed positive is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's very challenging to falsify results in a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Requires around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: These tests generally cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Keats, KS, supersedes traditional urine tests by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection window, hair tests can capture drug use patterns over an extended duration, offering insight into longer-term drug habits.

Employers appreciate hair tests for their resilience against evasion tactics common with urine tests. The longer detection time and the difficulty to alter make hair tests a preferred choice for comprehensive screening programs.

Extended Detection Window

In Keats, KS, hair follicle testing stands out with its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. This capability provides employers with a broader evaluation of an individual's substance history, making it invaluable for informed decision-making regarding potential hires or ongoing employee assessments.

Such prolonged detection periods help employers maintain safer workplace conditions, as it deters habitual users and ensures compliance with stringent drug use standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test in Keats, KS offers a tamper-resistant approach, significantly minimizing the risks of sample corruption. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are not subject to adulteration, presenting a clear and unquestionable result that employers can rely on for crucial employment decisions.

This reliable method boosts confidence in drug testing processes, ensuring that results are authentic and uncompromised, safeguarding the integrity of workplace drug policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
