Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Soldier, Kansas. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with centers in all cities ready to administer your test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on either the crown of your head or your body, and these tests can evaluate the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly favored the hair follicle test. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now require a hair test over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, for court use, and for probation individuals. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, spanning up to 90 days, captured in a monitored collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term data regarding alcohol and other substances by trapping markers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a lab involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for misuse drugs. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to stand in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and made ready for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug assessment is particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is conducted under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is very tough to deceive a hair drug test, therefore the results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can offer a timeline of drug use over a length of time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests”, the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Soldier, KS, provides numerous benefits over traditional urine tests. Enhanced detection accuracy and reliability make it a superior choice. While urine tests detect recent drug use effectively, the comprehensive nature of hair testing offers deeper insights, enhancing confidence in the test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
