Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Wilson, Kansas. Whether requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair examinations, accessible through numerous nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Our tests accommodate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and additional hair analysis options.

The preference for hair follicle testing over conventional urine tests has increased. It is favored by employers, judiciary, and substance abuse experts for enforcing no-drug policies. This method extends detection up to 90 days and is conducted under observation, offering near-impossible circumvention. However, for recent drug use, a urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands of hair, offering an extended historical perspective of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimum amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any further data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a quick preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective in excluding drug use on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that yield presumptively positive results during Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entirety of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are difficult to deceive, making results more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: Provides an understanding of drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to discern recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wilson, KS, hair follicle tests offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Their accuracy and reliability surpass urine-based methods, delivering clearer insights into an individual's substance use history. These benefits make hair testing the preferred option for employers seeking robust testing solutions, ensuring compliance with zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
