Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Alton, Kentucky. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise is in hair testing with facilities nationwide, ready to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. Hair tests evaluate substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common practice in substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often request hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies and courts supervising probationers. Their main advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a useful mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a repository for a prolonged record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs of up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near to the scalp yields 100mg, which constitutes the optimal specimen for initial and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, enhancements, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any added data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at markedly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening presents the highest level of complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggesting a presumptive positive are cleansed as required before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to ninety days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly hard to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Supplies historical data: It can display a record of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing is generally more expensive compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variance in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Alton, KY, hair follicle tests outshine traditional urine tests due to their extended detection window and reliability. Hair testing identifies drug use months later, ensuring ongoing compliance with workplace policies. This method excels in accuracy, offering passive resistance to falsification.

Comparatively, urine tests are limited in scope, often missing recent substance use. Hair tests, however, create a comprehensive substance profile, beneficial to employers, courts, and abuse professionals seeking long-term insights into habitual use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Alton, KY, excels in offering a lengthy detection window, capturing drug use over a 90-day period. This feature provides employers with a detailed understanding of an individual's substance history, crucial for assessing reliability and compliance.

Employers benefit from this comprehensive insight, gaining a broader view of an applicant's history. Such information supports informed hiring decisions, fostering a safer and substance-free work environment for all employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Alton, KY, hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant option, reducing risks associated with sample adulteration. Their design ensures reliability, minimizing the chance of manipulated outcomes, which can occur in other testing methods like urine tests.

This testing approach reassures employers and courts, offering confidence in the results' integrity. As a secure and trustworthy solution, hair tests are vital for maintaining stringent drug-free policies in the workplace and legal settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
