Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Avawam, Kentucky. Specializing in hair testing, we provide testing locations throughout all cities in the U.S., ready to administer hair drug or alcohol tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, there's been a notable shift towards hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals rely on these tests due to their extended detection period—up to 90 days. The observed and secure collection process prevents tampering, though urine tests remain best for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Using hair as a testing medium has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When taken close to the scalp, this method can yield detection capabilities spanning approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. The procedure for hair collection is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and transportation is hassle-free.

A sample consisting of a 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for initial testing and validation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or extensive panel tests beyond 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of the hair specimen. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent measure of body hair is permissible. By 'head hair,' we mean scalp hair exclusively. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially introduced into the laboratory’s procedures. This stage includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other necessary data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary, expedited evaluation for substances of abuse. While it is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive results obtained in this phase require further confirmation for judicial admissibility. Samples that yield presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate a follow-up verification.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, substances are removed from hair at lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug tests are the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when needed. The complete laboratory process ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is quite challenging to manipulate hair drug tests, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Gives historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use during a given period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier compared to other testing options.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the levels of drug metabolites detected in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
