Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Beaumont, Kentucky. For seamless testing for drugs or alcohol in hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities spanning cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head is required, though body hair can also be used, enabling tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized options.

Recently, the incorporation of hair follicle drug tests in drug screenings has risen. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. The salient advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection period, usually up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is hard to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can offer a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is gathered from near the scalp, it can provide a detection range of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

The optimal sample for screening and confirmation is a 1.5-inch piece composed of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp, equating to 100mg of hair. For tests that include EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair implies scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This process covers checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, creating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional info not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of use. While Screening effectively determines non-use for the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in legal scenarios. All samples with a presumptive positive during Screening need further confirmation.

For samples presumed positive at the Screening stage, extra hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), showcasing the complexity of conducting hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
