Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Bellemeade, Kentucky. For those needing drug or alcohol analysis, we provide specialized hair testing. Our centers operate in every city nationwide to conduct these evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years, replacing urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair analysis over urine screening. With zero-tolerance approaches, employers, judicial systems, and probationary services favor hair testing due to its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with nearly impossible odds of tampering. For drug use within a recent 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly acknowledged as effective tools for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over approximately a three-month period for both alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to mail.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s thickness) from the scalp will amount to 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests comprising more than 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Conducting a drug test in a laboratory encapsulates four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, where a sample is entered into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for negating substance use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to execute.

Any confirmed positive screen result undergoes validation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples with presumptive positives are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug screens can disclose drug usage up to approximately 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Reduced possibility of manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: This method provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than merely identifying recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug screens are costlier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
