Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Howardstown, Kentucky. Whether it's for drug or alcohol detection, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities in all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more customized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method for drug screenings. This shift is evident among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts who prefer it over traditional urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and legal settings, hair testing excels due to its 90-day detection window. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. Samples gathered near the scalp can yield detection for up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A portion of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair segments (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing details not already included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial fast check for substance abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use for most samples, though a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-accepted. Samples presumably positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is presumably positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for Extraction. In this step, substances are separated from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screened results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analysis. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 principles.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have shorter detection intervals.
  • Challenging to deceive: Deceiving a hair drug test is very difficult, thus the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical perspective: It supplies a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to uncover recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing preferred in Howardstown, KY over urine tests? Its superior benefits are evident in its detailed detection accuracy. While traditional urine tests may only capture recent substance use, hair testing offers a broader spectrum, identifying drug use with remarkable precision, thus providing a more reliable overview of an individual's drug history.

Extended Detection Window

In Howardstown, KY, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection period, uncovering drug use for up to 90 days. For employers, this means obtaining a comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history, presenting a more informed assessment tool of their lifestyle and tracing patterns that would otherwise remain hidden with shorter detection methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Howardstown, KY is virtually tamper-resistant. The method significantly lowers risks of sample manipulation, ensuring results are credible and indisputable. Confidence in results is paramount, and hair testing ensures this through its stringent collection and handling processes, pivotal for honest evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
