Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Kelly, Kentucky. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing spans across numerous cities nationwide, offering accessible hair testing facilities. To conduct a test, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is generally required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

A growing preference for hair follicle testing to determine drug use is seen in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are choosing this method over standard urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary oversight. Their benefit lies in the extended detection window of up to 90 days and almost foolproof collection process. Yet, for detecting usage within 5 days, urine tests remain optimum.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands capture a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for analysis and corroboration. For EtG, additional testing, and/or exams exceeding the standard 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In discussing head hair, the reference is specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory analysis of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a low-cost means to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive screen must undergo Confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that screen positive require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a positive indication during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug screens.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can confirm drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to alter: It is notably hard to manipulate the outcome of a hair drug test, making the findings more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days before drugs become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing tactics.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can sway drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though the term "hair follicle tests" is common, the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
