In Middletown, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers across the nation ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer personalized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction over traditional urine tests for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often demand hair tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage is the extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and difficulty to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through the integration of biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers, hair serves as a vehicle for documenting a long-duration history of substance use. When hair is collected near to the scalp, a detection period of approximately three months can be achieved for alcohol and various drugs. The collection process of hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and ensures convenient shipment.

A sample measured at 1.5 inches, which contains around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), can yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. A jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In situations where scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair. Other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair, are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the processing of a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning step involves the sample's initial processing into the lab's system, including verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary manual data entry that the electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it is an economical strategy to discard drug use in most samples, outcomes from a positive screen require confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening phase must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation during Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging procedure to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodology conducts the Confirmation of positive screening results. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests provide a detection window of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter window.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical pattern: They reveal a drug use pattern spanning a period rather than merely showing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: These tests are often referred to as "hair follicle tests", but this is inaccurate, as the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Middletown, KY, hair follicle testing surpasses the traditional urine test in several ways. The detection accuracy is higher, and the results more reliable. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses are less susceptible to tampering, offering a better overview of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
