Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mockingbird Valley, Kentucky. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers found across all cities nationwide to facilitate such examinations. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown of the head or body. Hair tests offer screening for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailor-made hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists increasingly specify hair drug tests over standard urine ones. These tests are preferred by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation individuals. Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, they are done under observation, and are nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for assessing drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in its strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated three months’ usage window for substances. The collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, requiring roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a standard pencil), provides 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or evaluations beyond ten panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise assessing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent volume of body hair is permissible. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab analysis of a drug test result is divided into four sequential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s framework, which includes confirming the sample's sealing and dispatch, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entries unavailable through an electronic custody system.

Screening involves a swift initial assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in many cases, a positive finding requires confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive results from the Screening stage necessitate a secondary confirmation test.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive result in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original batch for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those employed in methods like urine or saliva tests, accentuating the complexity of hair drug evaluation.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for 90 days, which surpasses the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair tests are notably difficult to subvert, thus yielding more trustworthy results.
  • Shows historical usage: It traces a pattern of substance use over a span of time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the evaluation targets the hair strand and excludes the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
