In Mud Creek, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing with testing centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair, these tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in recent years for drug testing purposes. Aimed at replacing the traditional urine test, they are now required by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Hair follicle tests are favored for their zero-tolerance policies, prolonged detection period up to 90 days, observation during collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an important method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. Hair collected near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the hair sample on a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we denote scalp hair solely. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the initial preparation of the sample for the lab's system takes place. This step ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry needed beyond what's provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening functions as a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for dismissing drug consumption in most samples, positive screenings need confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that display a presumptively positive result in Screening demand subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original collection and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug testing remains one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to substantiate any positive results from screening. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days following consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and unique hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

It unveils drug use spanning up to 90 days, offering a thorough view of an individual's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
