Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Murray Hill, Kentucky. Specialized in hair and alcohol testing, our centers operate in cities Nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair assessments can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or be customized for other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often prefer it over standard urine tests. Hair tests assist zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage is its longer drug detection window up to 90 days, conducted under observation, minimizing cheating. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for recent 5-day usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is emerging as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers within hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a prolonged snapshot of alcohol and drug exposure. A strand harvested close to the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol presence for around a 3-month timeframe. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample quantity for screening and confirmation. To perform EtG, additional tests, or analysis exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes any other type (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's database. This step involves checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary details not covered by an automated chain of custody mechanism.

Screening involves a quick preliminary analysis for drug abuse indicators. Though it’s a cost-effective approach to negate drug use for most samples, any positive screening result requires confirmation to stand in legal proceedings. Samples with a tentative positive outcome in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed for the Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. All samples testing positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted adhering to the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug presence for up to 90 days, while urine tests are limited to a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It outlines a pattern of drug exposure over an extended duration, rather than only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: A lag of approximately 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" might be misleading, as the analysis examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
