In Riley, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing services. For individuals needing drug or alcohol tests, our centers across the country specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for these tests. They can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, along with other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has been increasingly utilized for drug testing. This method is now favored by many employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, alongside courts and offenders on probation, rely on hair tests. The key advantage lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring a more tamper-proof process compared to urine tests. However, for detection within the last 5 days, urine remains the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are now recognized as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances like alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeline of alcohol and drug use. The collection process is straightforward, making it somewhat resistant to tampering and convenient for transport.

A strand assembly measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (analogous to a #2 pencil's width) taken nearest the scalp results in 100mg, an optimal quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For tests involving EtG, enhancements, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp strands, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory sequence for processing drug test outcomes comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses integrating the sample into a lab's framework, ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were correct, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting supplemental information absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Though cost-effective for excluding drug use in numerous specimens, a positive screening demands confirmation for legal consideration. Any specimens suggesting a positive in Screening mandate additional substantiation.

Should a specimen appear positive during Screening, supplemental sample preparation ensues for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), hence making hair drug assessments highly challenging.

Verification of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All suspected positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation gets scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair attributes such as color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite levels.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Beats Urine Testing is evident in Riley, KY. Hair test's superior detection period surpasses traditional urine tests, capturing drug use much more accurately. It offers unmatched reliability, making it a preferred choice for employers and legal practitioners, ensuring a thorough evaluation in various scenarios for maintaining safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Longer Detection Window is a defining benefit of hair follicle testing in Riley, KY. Employers gain extensive insight into an individual's substance use history. With a detection range of up to 90 days, it allows for a more comprehensive assessment compared to shorter-span urine tests, essential for informed decision-making in workplace environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistance is crucial for credibility in drug testing. Hair follicle tests in Riley, KY, minimize the risk of tampered outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
