In Sedalia, Kentucky, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our network of testing centers across the nation, including those in all cities, enables us to expertly handle hair drug or alcohol tests. Generally, samples taken require 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specified hair testing needs.

Recently, reliance on hair follicle drug tests has grown among entities conducting drug evaluations. Employers, legal bodies, and addiction counselors often prefer this method over urine testing. This approach suits programs with zero-tolerance drug policies and those overseeing probation. Its significant advantage is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days, under direct sampling, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine testing remains precise for detections within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands out as a potent mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol usage. The hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the strands' fibers that are growing. When the sample is obtained from near the scalp, it can reflect up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When talking about head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Method Summary

The core phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a specimen into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not addressed by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug consumption in the majority of specimens, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. All specimens that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

When a specimen demonstrates a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than by other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug screening is considered the most challenging technique.

The confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine screenings which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug screening, leading to more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can display a usage pattern over a span of time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks immediate use detection: It takes nearly 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings are typically more costly than other substance testing strategies.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the scalp’s underlining hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Sedalia, KY, stands out against urine testing due to its extended detection window and difficulty to manipulate. This method offers an accurate snapshot of an individual's substance use over the last 90 days, whereas urine tests only detect recent consumption. Employers benefit from this comprehensive analysis, obtaining a full profile rather than a limited snapshot often provided by urine tests.

Hair tests prove not only to be reliable but also less susceptible to tampering. Such qualities make them invaluable for organizations with stringent drug-free workplace policies. As hair retains a record of drug use, employers rely on them for detailed insights into an applicant's or employee’s long-term habits.

Extended Detection Window

In Sedalia, KY, hair follicle testing serves as a potent tool in detecting drug use over a prolonged period of up to 90 days. Unlike urine testing, which often only outlines a short-term history, hair tests provide a detailed record that benefits employers aiming for a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance use. This method ensures informed hiring and oversight, contributing to workplace safety and compliance.

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle tests helps identify frequent or chronic abuse that might otherwise go unnoticed. By capturing a longer history of substance consumption, employers can better assess the risk level of potential hires, contributing to more prudent hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robustness of hair follicle testing makes it a highly tamper-resistant option for those in Sedalia, KY. The method's strength lies in the reduced risk of sample adulteration—a common concern with urine tests. With hair samples, the observed collection process adds an extra layer of security, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the samples being tested for substance use.

With results that are difficult to falsify, hair follicle testing offers undeniable reliability for those enforcing drug-free policies. The process ensures that the test outcomes truly reflect the substance use habits of the individual being tested, making it a trusted choice for many organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
