Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing options in Ten Broeck, Kentucky. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled. We offer testing services across numerous cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized contents.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred choice for drug testing. Many organizations, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor them over traditional urine tests. Utilized by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers, these tests provide extended detection, often up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are difficult to manipulate. For recent drug use, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected next to the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hairs (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp will offer 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and any panel tests exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar volume of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four significant steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample’s initial processing into the lab system. This step checks that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary rapid analysis for drug use. Although Screening is a cost-effective means of ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed for court validity. Any samples that are presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is assumed positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging process to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All assumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredits to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus ensuring result precision.
  • Presents historical insight: It reveals a trend of drug consumption over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of immediate use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over urine tests in Ten Broeck, KY. Its superior detection accuracy and longer detection window make it more reliable for identifying substance use. Unlike urine tests, hair testing is less susceptible to tampering and can reveal drug habits over three months, surpassing traditional methods and providing a clearer view of a person's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Ten Broeck, KY, find the extended detection window of hair follicle testing invaluable. Able to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, it offers a thorough insight into an individual's substance history. This comprehensive approach ensures employers can make informed decisions, providing a full picture of an applicant or employee's commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are a boon for those in Ten Broeck, KY seeking tamper-resistant drug testing methods. Their design drastically minimizes sample manipulation risks. Collecting hair samples makes it nearly impossible to alter the results, ensuring the data's integrity remains intact and providing trustable outcomes in any setting requiring drug testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
