Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessment services in Waddy, Kentucky. For hair or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing spans across all U.S. cities with available testing sites. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other tailored testing needs.

The trend towards hair follicle testing for drugs has surged recently. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair analysis over urine testing. This method is preferred by those with strict no-drug policies, as it offers a 90-day detection span with observed sample collection, making it difficult to tamper. For recent drug use, urine tests remain the most precise option within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing stands out as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it captures biomarkers within its strands, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair provides nearly a three-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, with around 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be lacking, body hair in an equivalent amount can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the start of processing a sample within a lab's system. It involves confirming the sample’s seal and proper shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug use. It's a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, though positive results must be confirmed to stand up in court. Samples with preliminary positive results in Screening should go through a secondary confirmation.

When a sample indicates positive in the Screening phase, extra hair from the primary sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques carry out Confirmation for all positive screening results. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing if needed before confirmation. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows past use: It presents a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
