In Gardner, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing, experts in hair assessments for drug and alcohol detection. Our centers across the nation provide this service, utilizing hair from the head or body, generally requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of length. Hair samples can reveal the presence of drugs or alcohol/ETG, with the option for specialized testing.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a staple in drug screening methods, frequently overtaking standard urine tests. They are favored by employers, legal bodies, and substance misuse specialists for their zero-tolerance policies. The notable advantage of hair tests lies within their extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, robust observation during collection, and resistance to manipulation. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-lasting record of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, it can provide up to about a 3-month timespan for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's beneficial to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures correct sample sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for illicit drug presence. Although cost-effective in excluding drug use for most samples, any positive screening must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples considered positive at the Screening stage require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug tests.

Confirmation of positive results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Samples showing preliminary positives undergo a wash before confirmation if needed. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers chronological data: This method presents drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair pigmentation and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
