Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Eddington, Maine. Our expertise in hair testing includes drug and alcohol analysis, and we have facilities across the nation ready to assist. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your head or body. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

The adoption of hair follicle testing for drug analysis has increased in recent years. It is becoming the preferred method for employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists who are looking for alternatives to urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, probation cases, and offer up to 90 days of drug use history, making them hard to cheat and more reliable. Urine tests remain preferable for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair specimens has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the strands' fibers, hair offers an extended record of substance use. If hair is taken near the scalp, it can show drug use for nearly three months. The collection process is straightforward, it is relatively immune to tampering, and the sample is easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional modules, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair is permissible. When we mention head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses facial, axillary, and other types.

Process Overview

Laboratory drug testing comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is registered into the lab’s catalog. This phase includes validating the sample's seal and transport, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not managed by an automated custody system.

During Screening, an initial scan is performed to detect common drugs. Although Screening economically eliminates drug presence in most samples, any positive results must be verified for legal credibility. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should the Screening indicate a potential positive, additional hair is utilized from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels compared to other testing techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), posing a challenge for hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of a tentative positive result is carried out using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples preliminarily marked positive during Screening are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the standards set by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to the shorter period offered by urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Manipulating the outcome of a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronicles usage: Offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to register in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Concentrations of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
