Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Manchester, Maine. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers nationwide capable of conducting them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are sufficient for the test. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing options.

In recent times, the hair follicle test has increasingly become the preferred method for drug testing. It's now often requested by employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug protocols, courts, and probation officers due to its elongated detection period—up to 90 days, under direct observation, and is almost foolproof. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of substances by encapsulating markers within the growing hair fiber. When taken from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. It’s effortless to gather hair, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is an optimal amount for evaluation and verification. For EtG tests, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It’s advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are referring solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This incorporates ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen warrants confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are initially positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of all positive screening findings is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: They exhibit a drug usage pattern over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses usually cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
