Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Mount Vernon, Maine. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing allows us to serve nationwide, with available testing centers in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches from your head's crown or body hair suffices. Hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method for drug assessments. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection timeline—generally up to 90 days—using an observed collection process, making cheating almost impossible. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair retains a sustained record of these substances as it grows. Sampling hair from the scalp area can offer up to roughly a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) positioned nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for initial analysis and detailed confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may serve as a substitute. 'Head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' covers all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is comprised of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not provide.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug consumption in most samples, confirmation is required for any positive screen to be valid in a legal setting. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for further processing during Extraction. At this point, substances are isolated from hair in more diluted concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug examination the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screen is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Challenges in evasion: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insights: They can reveal a trend of drug use over an extended duration, rather than recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the process examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mount Vernon, ME
Hair follicle tests hold various advantages over traditional urine testing. They are inherently more reliable and offer a longer detection window. While urine tests may detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader timeline and are less susceptible to tampering. Employers and authorities value the consistency and accuracy offered by hair testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Mount Vernon, ME
Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, surpassing other testing methods like urine, which cover a much shorter timeframe. This extended period provides a comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance history, instrumental for employers to make informed decisions regarding hiring and employee management.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
