Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oxford, Maine. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is backed by numerous testing centers across cities nationwide. To carry out a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to meet specific needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method over standard urine tests for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair drug tests due to their zero-tolerance policies. Hair follicle tests extend the detection times to approximately 90 days, and due to their observed collection process, they are virtually tamper-proof. For recent drug use, particularly within a five-day span, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as a significant means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers in its growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, it affords up to a three-month detection range for both alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, resisting tampering, and is convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides about 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests that exceed 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is an acceptable alternative. "Head hair" signifies only scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of the sample into a lab system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data input beyond an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test for drug abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples testing positive in Screening must undergo additional verification.

Upon a positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing in Extraction. This step removes drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging method.

Confirmation for any positive result in screening uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before final confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in falsifying hair tests leads to more reliable results.
  • Retrospective use patterns: Offers insights into drug habits over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days before being detectable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading as the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
