In Arnold, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we operate testing facilities nationwide. Hair tests usually require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair can be tested. Analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom options, these tests are performed.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more commonplace for drug testing, especially among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals looking for alternatives to urine tests. They are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers. A significant advantage is the extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with collection under observation, making them hard to cheat. Urine tests, however, are still best for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now viewed as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair's growth. When clipped near the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month evaluation timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to dispatch.

An optimal sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a standard #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary items, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for precise measurement is suggested. If scalp hair can't be obtained, equivalent body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry that might not be available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a swift preliminary review for drug abuse. Despite Screening being a budget-friendly approach for negating drug use in most samples, any positive findings necessitate confirmation for court acceptance. All samples presumed positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumed positive samples undergo washing as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over an extended duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp's underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Arnold, MD, the superiority of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests is evident in its accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers a broader detection window, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of substance use history.

While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a historical insight, making them invaluable for employers wishing to understand long-term drug consumption habits of potential hires or current employees.

The accuracy of hair testing exceeds that of urine, reducing false negatives and ensuring a trustworthy drug-free workplace assessment aligned with modern demands.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection period of hair follicle testing in Arnold, MD, is one of its strongest features, covering up to 90 days of substance use. This broad window allows employers to review an individual's long-term drug use patterns.

By providing a comprehensive snapshot of an applicant or employee's substance habits, hair tests far exceed the detection capabilities of urine tests, whose window is limited to recent drug use.

Employers value the insight provided by hair follicle tests, allowing them to make informed decisions based on more accurate substance history reviews, thereby enhancing workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer a robust tamper-resistant testing method in Arnold, MD, significantly decreasing the likelihood of sample adulteration. This resistance provides reliable and trustworthy results.

While urine samples can be manipulated, hair tests are far less susceptible to such risks, ensuring the integrity of the drug testing process from collection to analysis.

The tamper-resistant nature of hair testing instills confidence among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, offering peace of mind that results truly reflect an individual's history without alteration.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
