In Barclay, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you're in need of testing for drugs or alcohol, our specialized centers, available in every city across the nation, are equipped for hair testing. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is preferred from the head or body for analysis. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are now opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are utilized by firms with rigorous zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and probation officers. One advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, and the observed collection procedure, making it nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been acknowledged as a robust means of identifying substance use involving drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a chronological record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair’s growing strands. By securing hair near the scalp, it offers a retrospective detection span of nearly three months for substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) obtained closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be accessed, a proportional quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Alternatively, body hair refers to all non-scalp hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The basic phases in the laboratory assessment of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial setup of a specimen into the laboratory’s database. This procedure entails the validation of the sample’s seal status and shipment, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and execution of any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening signifies an initial expeditious inspection for illicit substances. Even though Screening represents a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug usage across numerous samples, an affirmative screening outcome requires corroboration for judicial acceptance. All samples suspected of being positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In the event a sample is suspectively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are eluted from hair in far lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as a challenging procedure to administer.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of any suspectively positive samples is performed before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug consumption over a period of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage portrayal: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent usage detection: It necessitates about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Economic factor: Hair drug assessment tends to be costlier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and individual hair growth disparities may influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For drug detection in Barclay, MD, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in many areas. Hair tests excel with their extended detection timeframe, offering more reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
