Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Big Spring, Maryland. Individuals requiring drug or alcohol screenings can rely on our expertise in hair testing, with locations available throughout major U.S. cities for convenience. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for accurate analysis. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as the preferred method for drug screenings in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists frequently opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. This approach benefits organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary monitoring due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, challenging to falsify during direct collection. Still, urine tests remain ideal for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture long-term evidence of substance use by preserving biomarkers in their growing fibers. Collected at the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs up to a roughly 90-day period. The process of gathering hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for examination and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While it's a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples that appear positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample indicates positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair from the original sample is processed for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing prior to confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests provide a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, unlike just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
