Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Boyds, Maryland. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair analysis, providing services in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals mandate hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers utilize these tests, which offer longer detection periods of up to 90 days. Sample collections are observed, making it hard to tamper. However, for recent usage within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair drug testing has gained recognition as a potent means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by encapsulating markers within its fibers as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, harder to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield around 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, the advised specimen amount is 150mg. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. 'Head hair' pertains solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' references all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory drug test processing encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an expedited preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive results call for confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples with presumed positive results in Screening necessitate further validation.

When a sample returns a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests uniquely challenging to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used for the Confirmation of any positive Screening results. Before Confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The likelihood of circumventing a hair drug test is minimal, ensuring higher accuracy in results.
  • Chronological pattern of use: The test can depict a drug use trend over time, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection of recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: In general, hair drug tests incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rate fluctuations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," this procedure actually assesses the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
