Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Brookmont, MD. Our expertise in hair testing spans across multiple locations nationwide, ensuring you can access hair drug or alcohol testing effortlessly. The requirement typically involves 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. We offer drug, alcohol/ETG testing, or other tailored hair analyses.

In the past few years, the trend of using hair follicle drug tests has seen a rise. Nowadays, they're preferred over urine tests by many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. Zero-tolerance employers, judiciary bodies, and probationary programs rely on hair tests for prolonged detection periods that span up to 90 days, which are collected under observation and are hard to tamper with. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests still maintain accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of substance exposure by capturing biomarkers within its fibers. If taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over about a three-month span. It's straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 hairs (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Mention of head hair indicates scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to discount drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that are positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a notably lower concentration than with alternative methods (urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples suspected positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have a 90-day detection range, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Tampering with hair drug tests is extremely challenging, which ensures more precise results.
  • Chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug use over a period, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs require around 5-7 days post-use to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why consider hair follicle testing? In Brookmont, MD, this method outshines urine testing by offering longer detection periods and higher accuracy. hair testing can effectively showcase drug usage over extended durations, while urine tests only cover recent substance consumption. This superior detection capability ensures that employers and professionals receive a comprehensive understanding of individual drug use history.

The ability to detect substances over a 90-day span gives hair testing a distinct edge over urine tests. While urine tests are suitable for recent use detection, they fall short in long-term tracking. Hair follicle tests, however, provide unparalleled insight into sustained substance use, ensuring individuals subject themselves to a thorough evaluation process.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing makes it a superior method in Brookmont, MD. This approach can trace drug use up to 90 days, far exceeding other testing methods. Such a comprehensive timeframe allows employers to thoroughly examine an applicant or employee's substance history, ensuring a full picture of their habits.

Employers particularly benefit from this extensive detection period. It provides them with critical information on potential or current employees, capturing long-term substance use patterns. This approach assures that the chosen workforce adheres to the necessary standards and maintains a drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant method that ensures reliable results in Brookmont, MD. Compared to traditional drug tests, hair tests drastically minimize the risk of sample adulteration. This security means that the outcomes are indisputable, providing employers and authorities with confidence in the results.

Given its resistance to manipulation, hair follicle testing sustains its integrity through secure sample collection processes. This method ensures that no external interference compromises the results, maintaining trust in the data presented and supporting informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
