Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cherry Hill, Maryland. For those seeking a hair or alcohol test, our specialization in hair assessments and accessible centers across the Nation make testing straightforward. Generally requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specialized test needs.

Over recent years, drug testing approaches have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug tests. This method is now preferred by many workplaces, legal entities, and addiction specialists over the traditional urine test. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers use these tests primarily due to their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and minimal chance of test manipulation, though urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use, typically within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected close to the scalp, a hair sample can provide nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, the same quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample enters the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and filling in any additional necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug presence for most samples; however, to be court-admissible, a positive screen must undergo confirmation. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further processing in the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than found in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), posing unique challenges in hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptive positive samples are subjected to washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test results in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage data: It offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual examination is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
