Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Chevy Chase View, Maryland. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair analysis and we operate testing facilities across all nationwide cities. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically needed from the head's crown, though body hair can also suffice. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific analysis needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent approach for drug screening. This method is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. It's particularly valuable for enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies in workplaces, courts, and probation scenarios. The key advantage is the extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days, making it nearly foolproof through observed sample collections. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Using hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of substance use, capturing biomarkers within the developing hair shaft. When sourced near the scalp, hair samples can offer up to a three-month detection scope for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides about 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional items, or tests beyond ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we are focusing on scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other hair classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in the lab processing of drug test outcomes are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This process encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in a digital chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples with indicative positives in Screening do necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are drawn from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection interval.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over an extended duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectable drug levels in hair take around 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair-growth differences can impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Chevy Chase View, MD, hair follicle tests are superior to urine tests due to their extended detection window and inability to be easily tampered with. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a more reliable history of substance use, capturing a broader picture of an individual's habits. Extended Detection Window

In Chevy Chase View, MD, hair follicle testing provides an extensive detection window, greatly enhancing the insight into an individual's drug use history. This informs employers of any substance use over the past 90 days, compared to urine tests, which only reflect recent activity. Such comprehensive coverage assists in making well-informed employment and safety decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Chevy Chase View, MD benefits from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, the potential for sample adulteration is drastically reduced, providing indisputable results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
