Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Colesville, Maryland. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers located Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, either from the head or body, for accurate testing. Our hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol, ETG, or various customized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular choice. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies utilize these tests, which serve the needs of both courts and probationers. Hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage by allowing drug detection for up to 90 days. This process is conducted under observation, making it highly tamper-resistant. For recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent method, hair testing is highly effective in uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair can reflect a timeline of alcohol and other drugs over an extended period. Hair collected close to the scalp provides a potential detection timeframe of up to three months for such substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) gathered nearest the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG tests, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to collect 150mg of hair. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair sample is advocated. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent weight of body hair may be collected. When we indicate head hair, it exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning corresponds to the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This phase entails verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any supplementary data entry absent an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves conducting a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs. Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to identify drug use for most samples, although a positive screen result must be reconfirmed for it to be accepted legally. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be shown to be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, the focus is on extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), contributing to the demanding nature of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any screen-positive result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples undergo washing if needed before confirmation. The entire lab procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized both under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine testing offers a shorter detection period.
  • Testing integrity: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Usage history: Offers insights into drug consumption patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited in detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs versus alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
