In Creswell, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, we have nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. We analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair testing for its benefits. It provides a more extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that's nearly foolproof. Despite this, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When acquired from near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section comprised of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from closest to the scalp can yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmatory tests. When testing for EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is desirable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair includes all other hair varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use for the majority of samples, a positive result requires Confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should Screening identify a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair from the primary sample is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drug substances are removed from the hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any initial positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the guidelines of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeline.
  • Resilient against cheating: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of its results.
  • Retrospective data: It can depict a pattern of substance use over an extended duration, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent drug use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
