Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Damascus, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body for examination. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, drug screening methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor a hair test over the standard urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process making it nearly uncheatable. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample for screening and confirmation involves 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, delivering 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg specimen is suggested. We recommend measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory’s drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening comprises an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, relative to urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Damascus, MD, outshines traditional urine tests with its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent use, hair samples reveal a more comprehensive history of drug consumption over the last 90 days. This precise detection offers employers a broader insight, helping maintain safe and compliant work environments.

Hair tests present a significant advantage over urine testing in terms of reliability and accuracy. Urine tests are prone to manipulation, whereas hair testing provides undeniable results less susceptible to adulteration. This makes hair testing a more trusted solution for upholding workplace drug policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

The expanded detection window of hair follicle testing in Damascus, MD, provides unparalleled insight into drug use history. Unlike other methods, hair samples can uncover substance use for up to 90 days. This extended period empowers employers by offering a detailed account of an individual’s substance patterns, thus aiding in more informed hiring and retention decisions.

The extensive timeframe captured by hair tests enables a deeper evaluation of an applicant or employee's substance history. This method exceeds common testing options like urine, granting employers a richer understanding of behavioral patterns, potentially fostering safer, drug-free environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test in Damascus, MD, is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature, substantially minimizing risks associated with sample cheating. The integrity of the test is preserved, as it's far more challenging to alter hair samples compared to other testing methods, resulting in trusted and unquestionable data.

Businesses and legal entities favor hair testing due to its reduced susceptibility to manipulation. This robust method provides clarity and confidence in the results, ensuring that testing outcomes are both credible and defensible against any disputes or allegations of falsification.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
