Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dayton, MD. Specializing in this method for drug and alcohol analysis, our nationwide centers, including those in every city, are equipped for such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to fit specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred procedure over traditional methods. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and addiction specialists are increasingly opting for hair tests over urine ones. Hair testing's extended detection period of up to 90 days, coupled with the challenge of tampering, offers a compelling advantage, though urine tests remain more effective for very recent drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective method, hair testing serves in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term trace of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, it offers an approximately 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For specialized tests such as EtG or any exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to measure this on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial integration into the lab's system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substance use. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drugs in most samples, a positive result in Screening mandates a confirmation to substantiate its validity in legal settings. Any indicative positive results from Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive found in Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—follows the guidelines of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation by ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug use over months rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dayton, MD, the advantages of hair over urine testing are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, tracking substance use effectively over a lengthier period. This method ensures that past drug use cannot be easily concealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
