Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Delmar, Maryland. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide capable of administering these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body could be utilized. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing techniques often incorporate hair follicle assessments. Various employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle screenings are preferred by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is a prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, ensuring observed and virtually tamper-proof samples. Yet, to detect use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective instrument, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair contains a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs of nearly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair denote scalp hair only, while body hair pertains to all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in laboratory processing to generate a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system, which encompasses verifying proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. As Screening is cost-efficient for indicating drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a potential positive, a further portion is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly evaluated in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, promoting result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: This test can illustrate a trend of drug use across time, unlike solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Detectability in hair takes around 5-7 days post drug use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Delmar, MD, hair follicle testing is recognized for surpassing urine tests through its enhanced detection window and reliability. Urine tests may miss drug usage covered by the longer detection span of hair tests, up to 90 days. Hair tests offer a more consistent, tamper-resistant option, making them ideal for employers seeking accuracy and peace of mind against false negatives common in traditional urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing stands out in Delmar, MD, offering an expansive detection window up to 90 days. Unlike traditional tests, hair analysis provides employers with a comprehensive picture of an individual's substance history, allowing for informed decisions. This extended detection capability ensures that both recent and historical drug use are identified, significant for maintaining a safe and compliant workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Delmar, MD, lies in its tamper-resistant nature. As opposed to more easily altered tests, hair testing limits the possibilities for sample manipulation, ensuring authentic results. This method provides employers with confidence in the testing process, knowing the outcome cannot be easily influenced or doctored, which is critical for maintaining trust and accountability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
