Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Ferndale, Maryland. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the entire nation capable of conducting a hair sample test. Generally, hair from the crown of your head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair-based screenings.

Recently, the trend in drug testing leans towards using hair follicle tests more often. Employers, courts, and specialists in Substance Abuse are selecting hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation, hair follicle assessments offer a key advantage: a longer detection window, extending up to 90 days, observed under direct supervision, and thwarting attempts at cheating. However, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an instrumental method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and substances extending up to around three months. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil’s diameter) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming that the specimen was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from a digital chain of custody.

Screening serves as an expedited preliminary exam for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economizing in excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening mandates confirmation for acceptance in legal proceedings. Any samples presumed positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lesser concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a reason hair drug screening is notably challenging to conduct.

To validate any presumptive Screening result, Confirmation uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The end-to-end lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides long-term data: They deliver drug use trends over time rather than just recent use data.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests," the examination is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
