Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Forest Glen, Maryland. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with nationwide centers available for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere may be used. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other testing needs.

Lately, the trend in drug testing includes hair follicle tests more often. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug testing over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The major advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, in an observed setting, and very difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of drugs and alcohol by trapping biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to adulterate, and simple to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a quick preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical data: It can highlight a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Forest Glen, MD, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in detecting drugs due to its extensive detection window. Hair testing provides a more reliable and accurate snapshot of an individual's substance use history compared to urine tests, which mostly reveal recent drug use.
Hair follicle tests prove invaluable by highlighting patterns of usage over an extended timeframe.

The ability of hair tests to detect drug presence for up to 90 days offers a superior view of an individual's commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. In contrast, urine tests have a limited detection span.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Forest Glen, MD, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window for drug use. Capable of revealing substances used up to 90 days prior, this method provides a more comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history.
This allows employers to make more informed decisions based on long-term patterns rather than short-term habits.

The extended window of hair follicle tests surpasses the typical week-long scope of urine tests, revealing sustained non-compliance with drug-free policies. This is crucial in assessing candidates thoroughly.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Forest Glen, MD, hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant method, lowering the risk of sample contamination or alteration. Due to its nature, this testing ensures unquestionable results, critical for reliable detection and assessment.
This is especially beneficial for organizations needing assured outcomes for policy compliance and safety standard adherence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
