In Hess, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we're specialists in this field, with centers nationwide ready to conduct the tests you need. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown is necessary, though body hair can sometimes be used. With our tests, we can detect drugs, alcohol, or offer other customized hair testing services.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years as a viable method for drug detection. Many organizations, including employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts, are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. It's favored because it enforces zero-tolerance policies, aiding in probation compliance and court mandates. Hair tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under direct observation, and are tough to tamper with. For detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term data of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can show a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to alter, and straightforward to mail.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processes a drug test result through four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, verifying the sample's seal and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for illicit drugs. Although Screening is an affordable means to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be validated to be used in legal proceedings. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

With a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging technique.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS conducts Confirmation of any positive screen results. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine testing has a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days before being detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Widely known as "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hess, MD, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in several ways. Primarily, they provide superior detection accuracy and reliability. Employers looking to enforce zero-tolerance policies find hair tests more advantageous due to their extended look-back period. The observed collection process minimizes the chances of cheating, a significant setback with urine tests.

When comparing hair follicle to urine testing, the former holds an edge due to its longer detection window, overall accuracy, and substantial resistance to sample tampering. This makes it a preferred choice for professionals committed to maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hess, MD provides a major advantage with its extensive detection period of up to 90 days. This prolonged window allows employers and authorities to gain a comprehensive perspective on an individual’s substance use history. Such insights are invaluable for assessing long-term patterns rather than short-term tendencies.

Employers benefit from hair testing as it provides a more detailed view of an applicant’s or current employee's substance history. This longer look-back period aids in making informed employment decisions, contributing positively to workplace dynamics.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hess, MD, hair follicle testing is known for its resistance to sample adulteration. The robustness of this method ensures that results remain dependable and unswayed by attempts at manipulation, offering peace of mind to those requiring accurate results.

This testing method significantly reduces the risk of compromised samples, as it’s difficult to substitute or alter a hair specimen compared to urine. Hair follicle tests provide unquestionable results, alleviating concerns of tampering and ensuring trust in the outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
