In Highland, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we operate testing centers throughout the nation. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, either from the head or body, to conduct tests for drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other customized purposes.

The trend towards hair follicle drug tests has been increasing in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often favor hair drug tests over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services benefit from the extended detection period of up to 90 days, which hair tests provide. While nearly impossible to falsify, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reflect alcohol and drug consumption over a span of roughly 3 months. Hair sampling is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, an ideal sample size for analysis. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be sourced. When mentioning head hair, we imply scalp hair only; body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Lab processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial sample processing in a laboratory setting. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance abuse. While Screening is cost-effective and eliminates drug use in most cases, positive results require confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

During Screening, if a sample is potentially positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging to perform.

Confirming positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a usage pattern across a timeline, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in Highland, MD, through its extensive capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a broader detection period, ensuring more reliable results. As hair retains drug traces longer, it becomes a premier choice for industries with strict no-drug policies, offering unmatched accuracy and reliability in screening.

Furthermore, hair testing identifies a wider variety of substances due to its comprehensive detection window. Unlike the limited scope of urine tests, hair follicle testing ensures a more thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history. Employers stand to benefit from its superior detection capabilities, minimizing risks associated with false negatives.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Highland, MD, boasts an extended detection window, recounting drug use patterns up to 90 days prior. This enduring analysis presents employers with a thorough view of an individual's substance history compared to urine tests, which cover a shorter span, minimizing lapses in detection due to recent cessation.

Employers capitalize on this extended timeframe as it uncovers habitual use rather than isolated incidents. The test encompasses various substances, providing a broader perspective on an applicant's behavior. This comprehensive overview aids in ensuring informed hiring decisions, promoting workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Highland, MD, provide a tamper-resistant testing method that substantially decreases risks of sample adulteration. Unlike urine testing, the hair collection process, readily observed, diminishes possibilities of misleading outcomes by preventing alterations, ensuring genuine and precise results.

By collecting the sample directly from the individual, the chances of substitutions or contaminations decrease significantly. This reliability serves as an essential factor for institutions seeking sound, verifiable results. Hair follicle testing stands as a beacon of integrity in drug testing practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
