Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Mount Aetna, Maryland. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol check, our expertise in hair testing spans all cities nationwide, ready to conduct your assessment. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, taken from the crown or body. Drug, alcohol/ETG, and customized hair test evaluations are available for analysis.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach in drug testing, surpassing traditional methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this test over the usual urine sample ones. The zero-tolerance policies by employers, courts, and parolees necessitate hair testing for its prolonged detection window—up to 90 days—which is nearly impossible to falsify. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection, within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the structure of the hair shaft as it grows. When acquired from near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample’s initial processing into the lab’s system. Tasks involve confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Though it's an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires verification to be legally valid. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening call for additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

To confirm any positive Screening outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation when needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Resilience to tampering: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test leads to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical patterns: It reveals drug use tendencies over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
