Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Pine Orchard, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing ensures accuracy, with locations nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Tests are customizable to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

Recently, drug testing techniques have increasingly embraced hair follicle tests. Many employers, judiciary institutions, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over the usual urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. The advantage lies in a longer detection window, up to 90 days, requiring on-site collection, and their resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have increasingly been recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug history. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and effortless to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When citing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Any samples with potential positive outcomes in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening indication is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a record of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pine Orchard, MD, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests are evident. Superiority in detection accuracy lies in identifying longer-term substance use up to 90 days versus 3-4 days for urine tests. This broader window gives employers a detailed view of a person's substance history.

Hair tests' reliability makes them ideal for zero-tolerance policies. The near-impossibility of cheating, combined with a longer detection window, ensures employers are well-informed, significantly reducing the risk of missing habitual substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Pine Orchard, MD, shines with its extended detection window. Unlike the brief detection period of urine tests, hair analyses trace drug use up to 90 days back. This deeper insight offers employers a comprehensive understanding of an employee or candidate's habits.

Employers gain from the detailed retrospection of hair tests, distinguishing them from short-term methods. By capturing substance history over time, companies can confidently enforce policies and maintain standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Pine Orchard, MD, the reliability of hair follicle tests is unparalleled due to its tamper-resistant qualities. Hair samples are less susceptible to adulteration compared to other methods, ensuring authentic results. This robust testing method supports integrity within the workplace and legal settings alike.

By circumventing common manipulation tactics, hair testing delivers dependable outcomes. This makes it the preferred choice for those prioritizing accuracy and authenticity in substance testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
