Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pomonkey, Maryland. For any hair drug or alcohol testing needs, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers located across various cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body hair is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for other specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a commonly used method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely on hair follicle drug tests due to their extended detection period, which can be up to 90 days. These tests are conducted under observation, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within a short 5-day period, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers unique advantages. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within its growing strands. A sample taken close to the scalp can provide a detection period of nearly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen weight. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair is a suitable alternative. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Drug test analysis involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step involving the induction of a sample into the lab’s records. This step guarantees the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. It is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of cases. Positive screens require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample be positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is extracted for further testing. During Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed with techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to subvert, enhancing result precision.
  • Tracks usage history: Provides insight into drug use trends over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cant detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth ratios can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this assessment evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
