In the heart of Redland, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle assessments. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair sample analysis is unmatched, with facilities available across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for these tests, which screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer bespoke testing solutions.

The adoption of hair follicle examinations for drug testing has surged. Increasingly, employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair assays over traditional urine samples. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation benefit from its extended detection period of up to 90 days, secured through an observed process that resists tampering. However, urine tests remain the go-to for usage detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sourced from near the scalp, this method can provide a detection time frame of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample weight. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in the lab procedure for yielding a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and forwarded, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although it serves as an economical way to discount drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal considerations. Any samples preliminarily positive at the Screening stage demand further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging procedure.

To confirm any positive screening results, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to detect drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests detect usage over a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, hence enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides a timeline: This test can map out a pattern of drug consumption spanning a duration, as opposed to only identifying recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent drug use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Conditions including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of metabolized drugs in the hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
