Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screenings in Riva, Maryland. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis and possesses facilities nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. A requirement is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or, alternatively, body hair is often sufficient. Assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing alternatives.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has shifted more towards utilizing hair follicle drug analyses. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now demand hair drug evaluations instead of typical urine analyses. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended drug use detection timeframe, typically 90 days, processed via an observed collection, rendering it almost impossible to alter. Nonetheless, urine testing remains the most precise for detecting recent (up to 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands capture biomarkers, creating a detailed history of drug and alcohol use over time. Hair collected close to the scalp can offer a detection range of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil and consisting of about 200 hair strands, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the recommended quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results follows these four key procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step checks that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an expedited preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, courts require confirmation of positive screens for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is regarded as one of the more intricate methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive result from initial Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples preliminarily testing positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and maintains ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days into the past, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to falsify, leading to more dependable results.
  • Presents historical data: It reveals a behavioral trend of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, not merely recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become measurable in hair.
  • High cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels found in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
