In Saint Charles, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you seek a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with numerous centers across all US cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. Hair testing evaluates drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, drug testing methods more frequently incorporate hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers favor hair tests due to their prolonged detection capability of up to 90 days, involving an observed collection that is hard to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronological record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month window of detectability for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For more extensive tests like EtG, add-ons, and panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. Reference to head hair denotes only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system, ensuring correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data entry that isn't rendered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs. While cost-effective in dismissing drug use in most samples, any positive results need confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples displaying presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positives during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), adding to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation where necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which are more limited.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical use patterns: It outlines drug usage patterns over time, unlike spotting just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although dubbed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Saint Charles, MD surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. The extended detection period is key, allowing employers to screen for drug use history far beyond the urine test's capacity.

With its superior accuracy and reliability, hair testing ensures that results are difficult to dispute. Urine tests lack such precision, often missing detection marks that hair tests reliably identify.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Saint Charles, MD benefit from hair follicle tests due to their extended detection abilities, capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive window offers insight into a candidate or employee's drug use history.

Traditional tests can't match this duration, making hair testing crucial for comprehensive evaluations. This extensive period allows employers to maintain workplace integrity and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Saint Charles, MD offer a tamper-resistant option, minimizing sample adulteration risks. These tests deliver dependable results, reducing errors associated with alternate testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
