Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing for drugs and alcohol in Saint Leonard, Maryland. If a hair test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with facilities across all cities nationwide prepared to conduct hair testing. For effective testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method over the years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer it to standard urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, this method is favored due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and minimal potential for tampering. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is suggested. It is advised to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The principal steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample enters the laboratory system. This involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not found in an electronic tracking system.

Screening swiftly assesses for substances of abuse. While it's economically viable to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positives in Screening need further validation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex processes.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The whole lab process from start to finish complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to deception: Hair drug testing is difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It reveals usage patterns over time rather than recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft, not the follicle within the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Saint Leonard, MD
Hair follicle tests stand out for their superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to urine tests. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a comprehensive overview, with a detection window stretching back up to 90 days. Such broad coverage gives a detailed insight into an individual's substance history.

Employers favor hair tests due to their inability to be easily manipulated. Unlike urine samples, which are susceptible to tampering, hair follicle tests provide a robust defense against fraudulent results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
